This is a note to self
Many conversations we have, are fairly repetitive. Conversations like:
- “How was your XXX vacation?”
- “Hey, I joined the company/team recently”
- Any kind of introduction conversations
It’s a good idea to mentally create scripts for these conversation beforehand.
You will form a script anyways after the first 3-4 conversations. The trick is to do it in advanced so that even those first 3-4 conversations are good.
If you are joining a new company and introducing yourself to a team members, your goal is to get to a good, functional, working relationship as soon as possible. So the script should include:
- Telling your background as quickly as possible. You don’t need to boast about yourself. You aren’t trying to impress this person. Just get them to like you.
- Understanding what they do at the company
- Getting their opinion on the product/ what can be done better etc. Some gossip to build rapport
- Maybe tell a joke or two to create a rapport
- Understand what they expect from you in future
The script for a tale of the vacation might include
- 2-3 novel things you experienced
- A story about something that happened to you. Preferably something funny.
- A piece of advice if they want to travel at that destination.
Create a script. Be pro at conversations. Thats it.
